Year 4 Admissions 2026-2027: Course Information and Next Steps
Ability-based groups covering challenging Year 4 and Year 5 Maths and English, with optional extra classes to match your child's needs.

Year 4 course overview
- One compulsory two-hour core lesson every week
- Ability-based groups of approximately 10 to 12 pupils
- Experienced and friendly teachers who hold Enhanced DBS checks
- Lesson plans, materials and homework designed and overseen by Mrs Pillai
- Brief weekly feedback and more detailed monthly progress feedback
- Termly assessments and a compulsory end-of-year examination; exam results and detailed feedback are provided by email
Optional additional classes
Paper classes, support classes, VR/NVR and holiday lessons are available separately. VR/NVR lessons take place online on alternate Sundays and cost £30 per lesson. Additional holiday lessons are optional unless specifically made a condition of a pupil’s place. See Year 4 Extra Classes below for full details.
Curriculum and homework
The course covers challenging Year 4 and Year 5 Key Stage 2 Maths and English. Homework is provided through Dropbox and takes approximately 30 minutes per day, five days a week, including Maths and a writing task and/or comprehension every week. Learn2Write tasks must be uploaded at least three days before each lesson.
Fees and important January increase
September to December 2026: £24 per hour; £48 per two-hour lesson.
From January 2027, tuition increases by £1 per hour to £25; the weekly two-hour lesson becomes £50.

Pillai Tutors is Ofsted registered. Fees are payable monthly in advance by bank transfer, Tax-Free Childcare or childcare vouchers.
Course books
- Three compulsory Maths books: £100 for the complete set
- Year 5 CGP Reading and SPaG books: provided free for 2026-2027
- Advanced Reading book: £30; Advanced Vocabulary book: £30
- The advanced English books are provided in March; the £60 invoice is issued in December
Published holidays
Classes run through half-terms and school holidays, apart from the holidays below.
- Christmas and New Year: Sunday 20 December 2026 to Saturday 2 January 2027
- Easter: Thursday 25 March to Wednesday 31 March 2027
- Summer: August is off; the final lesson is Saturday 31 July 2027
Missed lessons and assessments
Where another suitable session remains that week, we will try to offer an alternative. Otherwise, the lesson remains payable and the materials and homework are provided. The compulsory end-of-year examination is Sunday 27 June 2027 and costs £50, payable with May fees.

Support Class
Recommended for pupils who scored below 50%. It is required for grammar-school applicants who scored below 30% in any assessment when this is stated as a condition of their programme.
- Reinforces weekly learning through guided revision and targeted support.
- Builds confidence and addresses gaps identified in assessment.
Paper Class
Recommended for pupils scoring 60% or above, and for pupils who would benefit from regular timed practice. These are assessment-and-review sessions rather than teaching classes.
- Timed Maths and English papers, followed by review with a Teaching Assistant.
- Answers and worked methods are emailed after the session.
- A papers-only option is also available.
Creative Writing and Comprehension
Recommended for pupils who scored 50% or below in the English assessment, or who need further help with creative-writing techniques and comprehension strategies.
- Focused teaching with regular small-group practice.
- Choose either the Tuesday or Thursday online class.
Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning
Develops the techniques and strategies required for schools that assess verbal and non-verbal reasoning, including schools in Kent and Bromley and independent schools.
- Core concepts, exam strategies and extensive practice.
- Runs online on Sundays that alternate with the Paper Class.

Important information
- Paper Class starts on Sunday 27 September 2026. Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning starts on Sunday 20 September 2026. They run on opposing alternate Sundays, both from 10 am to 12 pm.
- Places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Fees are payable monthly in advance and are non-refundable for sessions missed by the pupil.
- Four term-time weeks’ written notice by email is required to withdraw from an extra class.
